Course Outline

This half day course is for project members and business users involved in developing software systems using Process Mentor. The course covers the essentials of managing and working in a project team using Process Mentor.
By attending this course, participants will get an understanding of the role of a software process and a “big picture” view of how a project runs using Process Mentor.. This course ensures that all participants in a project develop a high level understanding of Process Mentor. and their specific role within a project.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how a process can help you in developing software systems
  • Have a high level understanding of the process called Process Mentor
  • Be familiar with the structure, terms and techniques of Process Mentor

Why do we need a process?
This section examines the background to software processes and why they are important in software development.
What is Process Mentor?
This section describes the role and scope of Process Mentor. It describes the components of the product, the coverage of the process and the relationship of the process to the Capability Maturity Model (CMM), the Unified Modelling Language (UML) and other standards e.g ISO 9000
Areas of Expertise(Process Units)
This section describes how the core processes are defined, and discusses the scope of each process. This section provides a “breadth” rather than “depth” view of each area of expertise covered by Process Mentor.
Roadmaps (Project Lifecycle)
This section describes how the lifecycle of a project is defined using project roadmaps. It examines a typical project roadmap showing how the core processes are tied together during a project. This section provides the “big picture” view of how a project is run.
Process Architecture
This section examines how Process Mentor provides a reusable framework for developing processes that can be tailored to the specific needs of a project.It shows how Process Mentor can be expanded and integrated with other methodologies.
Other Issues
This section examines a range of other issues related to the deployment of the process. This section covers topics such as:
- Online Web version
- the integration with Case Tools such as Rational Rose
- the integration of Process Mentor with other development processes
- skills development and project deployment.

Prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience in software development in a commercial environment. No prior exposure to object-oriented design or programming is necessary.
