Paper: A Peek at Java SE 8
Functional Programming comes to Java
By Peter Wong, Principal Trainer
On March 18, 2014, Oracle announced the release of Java SE 8. This was both a long awaited, and much anticipated upgrade to the Java Programming Language. The most significant change to the language was the addition of lambda expressions and other important new features to support functional programming. This brings Java in alignment with other programming languages like C# and C++11, which have also added functional programming support. Java developers now have the best of both object-oriented programming and functional programming. We can now enjoy most of the benefits of functional programming by building on our knowledge of Java, and not have to transit to a new programming language like Scala.
